On January 7, 2026, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced it will vote on an Order to create a new category of unlicensed devices known as Geofenced Variable Power (GVP). These devices would be allowed to operate outdoors at higher power levels in the 6 GHz band, expanding and enhancing unlicensed spectrum use while relying on geofencing controls to manage interference risks.
The proposal aims to improve performance and capacity for next-generation wireless applications and services operating in the 6 GHz band.
