The European Union has confirmed that new cybersecurity obligations under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED 2014/53/EU) will become mandatory on November 2025. The updated rules strengthen protection for users and networks by requiring radio equipment to meet enhanced security, privacy, and anti-fraud criteria.
The measures apply to a wide range of connected devices, including home alarm systems, wearables, baby monitors, toys, and smart entertainment products.
To support compliance, the European Commission published three harmonized standards on 30 January 2025 (Implementing Decision 2025/138):
- EN 18031-1:2024 – Internet-connected radio equipment
- EN 18031-2:2024 – Equipment processing personal, traffic, or location data
- EN 18031-3:2024 – Devices enabling monetary or cryptocurrency transfers
Manufacturers may use these standards to demonstrate conformity. If specific limitations within the standards affect a product, assessment by a Notified Body becomes mandatory.
