Why Frequency Matters in Wireless Product Certification

For engineers developing wireless products, frequency selection is a technical decision. For companies entering international markets, it is also a regulatory one.

A wireless product that meets the requirements of one market may not automatically meet the requirements of another. The same frequency, bandwidth, power level, or transmission technology can be treated differently depending on the country and its spectrum regulations.

This becomes particularly important when a product is designed for multiple markets from the beginning.

The regulatory impact of frequency

When evaluating a wireless product for a new market, regulators and certification bodies may consider:

  • Operating frequency and permitted frequency bands
  • Output power and power density
  • Bandwidth and emission characteristics
  • Channel configuration
  • Antenna type and gain
  • Spurious and out-of-band emissions
  • Applicable technical standards and testing requirements

A configuration that is acceptable in one country may require a different assessment—or may not be permitted in the same way—in another.

The engineering specifications of the product do not change simply because the destination market changes. What changes is the regulatory framework applied to those specifications.

This is why international compliance should be considered early, particularly when a product supports multiple bands, configurable radio parameters, or different antenna configurations.

Before entering a new market

For companies expanding an existing wireless product internationally, the important question is not simply:

“Is this product already certified?”

It is:

“Does the existing configuration meet the regulatory requirements of the market we want to enter?”

A technical assessment before certification testing can identify differences between markets and help determine whether the existing product configuration can be certified as-is or whether additional considerations are necessary.

At TrustCert, we help companies evaluate wireless products against the regulatory requirements of their target markets, including the United States, Brazil, and Latin America.

Building a wireless product is one challenge. Making it compliant across markets is another.
